Smudging

Smudging is the ceremonial practice of burning dried aromatic leaves or wood to purify spaces and ward off negative energy. Sage is perhaps the most famous smudging plant (the practice is often called “saging”), but countless others are used, including bay leaf, cedar, lavender, mugwort, palo santo, rosemary, and sweetgrass.
