Uzazi

Uzazi is the spice derived from the dried fruits of the West African prickly ass tree (Zanthoxylum gilletii) in the citrus family (Rutaceae). It is a close relative of the Chinese Sichuan Pepper and the Japanese sanshō pepper. All three spices impart a characteristic numbing effect on the tongue and lips due to the compound sanshool.
