Essential Oils

Essential oils, also known as volatile oils, are a specific type of phytochemical characterized by their volatile nature. They readily evaporate at room temperature and carry a strong aroma. Essential oils are not single molecules, but rather complex mixtures of many different compounds – sometimes hundreds – which all contribute to the oil’s unique scent, flavor, and medicinal properties.

They are termed “essential” because they contain the “essence” of a plant’s fragrance. Essential oils are the primary reason why spices and herbs are so valuable to the culinary world – their aromas and flavors contribute significantly to the seasoning of food. They are also used in aromatherapy, cosmetics, personal care, medicinal, and cleaning applications.
