Cultivar

A cultivar is a plant variety created through cultivation and selective breeding by humans (literally, a cultivated variety). Both varieties and cultivars are variations on the same original species (not new species), but unlike a “variety,” cultivars are not naturally occurring. Cultivars are molded by humans for desirable characteristics (like flavor/aroma, appearance, and disease resistance) that can be maintained through human propagation (reproduction through cuttings, grafting, controlled seed production, and so on).
