Avocado Leaf

Avocado leaf, or hojas de aguacate, is the spice derived from the leaves of the Mexican avocado tree (Persea americana var. drymifolia) in the laurel family (Lauraceae). Although the genus Persea contains multiple avocado varieties, only the Mexican variety carries the distinctive anise-like aroma that defines the culinary leaf. Leaves from other avocado varieties, particularly the Guatemalan, can be toxic and are not used in cooking.
