Phytochemicals

Phytochemicals, also known as phytonutrients, are a broad group of bioactive compounds naturally occurring in plants. Phytochemicals serve various roles for the plant, such as defending against pests and diseases, attracting pollinators, and regulating growth. They are also responsible for giving fruits, vegetables, grains, spices, and herbs their color, flavor, and aroma.

Beyond these sensory effects, these compounds exhibit potent biological activities in the human body. Unlike fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, phytochemicals are not essential nutrients for human survival. However, they play a significant role in promoting health, associated with the prevention and treatment of various diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Phytochemicals can reduce inflammation, promote antioxidant activity, mimic hormones, stimulate enzymes, destroy bacteria, and more.
